The Luxurious Fragrance Free Shampoo and Conditioner: Necessaire

woman's hand holding bottles of necessaire shampoo and conditioner with text overlay.

When my previous favorite clean shampoo and conditioner were discontinued, I went on the search for a new favorite duo. My thin, straight, color-treated hair needs hydrating formulas that won't weigh it down. I also go a few days between washes and use a good bit of dry shampoo, so I need a shampoo that cleanses well. I took a chance on Necessaire's fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner, and I have to say, my expectations were exceeded by far. Read on for my full, honest review of Necessaire The Shampoo and The Conditioner fragrance free hair products!

Why You Need Clean Shampoo and Conditioner

Chemicals are found everywhere in our daily routines, and especially in our personal care products. Shampoo and conditioner can be some of the biggest offenders when it comes to personal care products. They can contain several chemicals1, like:

    • sulfates
    • parabens
    • phthalates
    • formaldehyde releasing preservatives
    • BHT
    • SLS
    • silicones
    • synthetic fragrance

These chemicals have been linked to everything from hair loss and skin irritation, to more deleterious effects like cancer, hormone disruption, and immunological or neurological disorders.2,3,4,5,6,7 When we shower and wash our hair with products these chemicals, we not only expose ourselves by inhaling the fragrance, but we absorb some of the chemicals through our skin. Our skin, and especially our scalps, are capable of absorbing all kinds of things, including chemicals in shampoo and conditioner. Even small exposures that happen frequently enough can cause toxins to build up over time and cause harm.

Given that shampoo and conditioner are products that most people use pretty frequently and in large amounts, it's wise to seek out a nontoxic formula for your daily shampoo if you're serious about protecting yourself from harmful toxin exposure.

Necessaire The Shampoo: My Honest Review

    Ingredients: 10/10

Necessaire products are free from alcohol, silicones, sulfates, phthalates, parabens, PEGs, or synthetic fragrance, and are formulated without ingredients on the EU prohibited substance list. The Shampoos is certified by The National Eczema Association. Bonus points for skincare-worthy ingredients like hyaluronic acid and B vitamins.

    Experience: 9/10

Even without a scent, this shampoo is luxurious. Everything from the branding to the packaging, to the product itself feels high end and is a joy to use, though I will say it's a little difficult to get that final bit out of the bottle when you're almost out if you're one of those people who like to use every last drop!

    Performance: 10/10

My hair and scalp felt amazing after using this shampoo. I don't have eczema or even flaking often, but I can see how this would clear up those issues right away. My hair felt well cleansed without being stripped, and was light and bouncy after drying!

    Value: 8/10

At $28 a bottle, this shampoo is in line with the cost of most clean shampoos.

    Overall: 9.25/10

    Experience: 9/10

Just like the shampoo, Necessaire's fragrance-free conditioner is every bit as luxurious as any high end scented conditioner. The packaging looks and feels nice, and the product glides through my hair easily.

    Performance: 10/10

This conditioner outperforms most of the clean conditioners I've used. The first use, I was worried that that it would be too heavy and make my hair greasy quickly, but it's the perfect weight - not too heavy, but still deeply moisturizing. I could go my normal 2-3 days between washes with no problem while still effectively detangling and hydrating my hair with just a small amount. Even without the fragrance, I'm smitten!

    Value: 9/10

The price is about in line with most clean conditioners. I found that I have to use a very small amount, which makes the bottle last longer!

    Overall: 9.5/10

    Overall Impressions

This just may be my new go-to shampoo and conditioner duo after my previous favorite was discontinued! While I don't necessarily have a sensitive scalp, I like the idea of a fragrance-free product to reduce the risk of any toxic fragrance - though I was a little worried I wouldn't like a completely unscented hair product. I'm happy to say I didn't miss the fragrance at all - these hair products are so luxurious even without it! The performance is amazing - deeply hydrating, even for color-treated hair without weighing thin hair down one bit. You're going to love these products!
