Switching to a new clean deodorant feels like a huge crapshoot at times. A new clean deodorant could be amazing, and it could be awful. And it's often an investment. If you're just starting out with clean deodorant formulas, it can be especially discouraging as your body adjusts to no longer having aluminum and other sweat-blocking ingredients. Over time, I've used LOTS of clean deodorants - and many bad ones - but I've found a few that I like work well for me. One in particular stand out for not only stopping odor-causing bacteria, but also for preventing ingrown hairs that can happen with shaving before they ever start. Why You Need A Clean Deodorant
For me, switching to clean deodorant was an easy choice. The main ingredient in typical antiperspirant deodorants is aluminum, which has been linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. While the evidence is inconsistent and lacking, the ability for aluminum to interfere with estrogen receptors has been demonstrated. Furthermore, other chemicals commonly found in typical drugstore deodorants have been linked to breast cancer too. Even a small amount of evidence is enough cause for me to avoid regular deodorant, given my genetic predisposition to breast cancer.
When I decided to make the switch to natural products several years ago, deodorant was one of the first products I focused on, since I use it daily and in close proximity to susceptible breast tissue. That said, it's a process finding the right natural deodorant. Not all of them are created equal.

Nécessaire The Deodorant Gel: My Honest Review
Ingredients: 10/10
This EU compliant deodorant gel is formulated with clean ingredients (no PEGs, parabens, silicone, or aluminum), no baking soda (for sensitive skin), and is certified cruelty-free. It receives a score of 2 in EWG's database, which is pretty great.
Experience: 10/10
I love everything about using Necessaire products. It always feels luxurious, but in an understated way. The packaging is sleek, the Eucalyptus scent smells like a spa, and the gel glides on and disappears instantly.
Performance: 8/10
At stopping odors, this deodorant is one of the best clean formulas I've tried. Both the unscented and Eucalyptus versions are great, though I think the unscented slightly wins out for me. What I really love, though, it how it stops ingrown hairs after shaving! I swipe it on as soon as I get out of the shower and have no bumps in sight thanks to the AHAs. It's truly amazing. I will say, I think it was a little more effective while I was pregnant than when I wasn't. Hormones and body chemistry and all that. But even through the postpartum hormone rollercoaster, it works better than most clean formulas!
Value: 9/10
The price point of this deodorant is a little more than the kinds you'd find at Whole Foods or Sprouts, but it's in line with other high end clean deodorants. A little goes a long way, so it lasts a long time!

Overall Impressions
I'm a big fan of Nécessaire's other clean beauty products, like their unscented Shampoo and Conditioner, body wash, and hand cream. The deodorant lives up to my expectations for the brand, and then some! Not only does the clear gel glide on super smooth and dry quickly (no sticky underarms here!), it also lasts all day and truly protects against odor - even in the summer. Even the unscented version. (Though I do love the Eucalyptus, too.)
But the real differentiator is how smooth is helps my skin stay. I tend to get razor bumps easily - but not when I use this deodorant. Thanks to the AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) which gently exfoliate skin, and witch hazel, which soothes irritation, any ingrown hairs or bumps that threaten to pop up are stopped dead in their tracks. So all I have to do after shaving is swipe it on and I'm left with smooth, fresh underarm skin. Double duty with one clean product? Yes, please!
